Heartburn is a common condition during pregnancy. The hormones of pregnancy combined with the pressure that your baby exerts on your abdomen can cause heartburn. Some of the heartburn symptoms during pregnancy may be relieved by a making a few simple changes and by trying heartburn no more. But first let’s cover the symptoms that you might be experiencing.
If you feel pain or burning in your stomach chest or throat, you are not alone. These symptoms are common occurrences in heartburn sufferers all over the world. You could also experience a sour or bitter taste in your mouth. Or you could even feel food coming back up your throat. The first thing you should do, when you experience these symptoms, is consult with your doctor.
When you first get pregnant this alters the hormones in your body. These hormones work together to weaken the smooth muscles that hold food and acid in your stomach. When these muscles don’t do their job, acid can go in the wrong direction.
Later in pregnancy, as your baby grows bigger, it exerts pressure on your stomach. This pressure squeezes your stomach, and will often push acid up your throat. When this happens heartburn is the final result.
Obviously, you can’t change the hormones that your body produces or the pressure that your baby puts on your stomach. But there are several things that you can do. First, you can avoid foods that cause heartburn. Watch out for spicy or fatty foods. Second, you should wear loose fitting clothing that does not constrict your waist. Third, you can eat smaller meals. Just be sure to eat more often to make sure that your nutritional needs are met. Fourth, don’t lie down immediately after eating. Wait for at least three hours. And finally, elevate your upper body with an extra pillow when you are sleeping. This will allow gravity to work with your stomach, rather than against it.
