The Causes of Heartburn

Heartburn can happen for a number of reasons. But virtually all of the reasons hinge upon stomach acid sneaking through the Lower Esophageal Sphincter or LES.

Gravity and the LES
The LES, in conjunction with gravity works to keep stomach acid in the stomach. It has two important jobs. The first is opening to allow food into your stomach. And the second is shutting to keep stomach acid from bubbling up into your esophagus. Heartburn occurs when the LES fails to perform the latter properly.
Occasional bouts of heart burn are not a big deal, but if it occurs regularly it could erode the lining of your esophagus and turn into gastro esophageal reflux disease (GERD). GERD is a horrible condition and you should work to avoid it.
The fundamental cause of heartburn is an LES that does not function as it should. It either opens up too much or it does not close tightly enough. However, a weak LES is not the only cause of heartburn. Heartburn is often exacerbated by two additional factors: eating too much food or putting too much pressure on your stomach. When you overeat the already weak LES has an even harder time staying shut. Likewise when you put pressure on your stomach by lying on it or wearing tight clothing, your LES has to work overtime. Pressure is a big reason why over 50% of pregnant women experience heartburn on a regular basis.
Food, Smoking and Stress
In addition heartburn can be caused by several other factors. Certain foods and beverages like tomatoes, chocolate, alcohol and caffeine are serious triggers of heartburn. Smoking is a big taboo as nicotine weakens the LES. Finally, stress is also an important factor in causing heartburn.
So as you can see a number of factors working together cause heartburn. So if you want to eliminate your acid reflux you will need to find a way to address each of these factors. Simply taking care of one of these factors may bring some relief. But if you want complete relief, you will have to address all of the factors.
