Pregnancy Heartburn Remedies

In this post, I am going to provide a few tips on pregnancy heartburn remedies. As you know, it is almost impossible to be pregnant without experiencing heartburn from time to time. When you are pregnant your body produces various hormones that relax smooth muscles like the muscles in the valve that separates your stomach from your throat. And the net result is that you experience heartburn much more frequently.

The first thing you should do is try to minimize the amount of pressure on your stomach. Obviously, a growing baby places a lot of pressure on your tummy, so you want to do everything possible to reduce the pressure that is placed on your stomach from other sources. First, wear loose fitting clothing that does not constrict your waist. Second, maintain good posture, slouching and bending at the waist increases pressure on your stomach. Third, don’t lie down right after eating.

Next, consider what you eat and drink. Drink a lot of water to stay hydrated, but try to keep most of your fluid intake between meals. Eat a good amount of fiber from fruits and vegetables. Avoid eating foods that cause heartburn. Anything oily or spicy is off limits. And yes you should also avoid chocolate.

Eat smaller meals, because these are easier to digest and place less pressure on your tummy. But of course you need to take in more calories to support your growing baby, so eat more than three meals per day to ensure that your nutritional requirements are met.

Make sure that you have a lot of good bacteria in your digestive system. Eat yogurt with active cultures. This will help to keep your digestive system healthy and prevent any bad bacteria from moving in.

If you suffer from really bad heartburn, the first thing you should do is consult with your doctor. Then you might consider using antacids, but only as a last resort if nothing else is giving you relief. Avoid aluminum antacids, because they might be bad for your baby. If you have to use an antacid, calcium based antacids are probably best, but first consult your doctor.
